40 HOURS

I’ve been having trouble with my work ethic, so last week I committed myself to doing 40 hours of proper work, no matter what. The idea was, everyone does a 40 hour week as normal, right? So it should be easy – the bare minimum. Shame on me if I can’t do it.

Given my tendency to muck about, this meant I ended up working pretty much solidly through the evenings of Monday-Friday, but I did it! And that 40 hours work led to a pretty solid start on my new game. There’s a new playable version beneath the jump.

Give it some time to load. It’s about a megabyte, and I haven’t written a preloader yet. You’ll hear the music when it starts 🙂

Click on it to start controlling the game.

Arrow keys: move
X, Z: your ship’s weapons
C: suicide
R: restart game

Beat waves to get lives.
Die to get time.

When your ship dies, you’ll take over an ally ship if available. Whenever your entire wave dies though you lose 1 life, gain 20 seconds, and take over a ship in the enemy wave to FIGHT BACK at the wave you were just playing.

When you die, watch the flashing outline to see which ship you’ve just changed to.

It’s a little bit confusing, I know, but give it a try and let me know what you think. Tell me your best high score, too! It’ll help me tune the difficulty 😀

  1. When you die you go into your copilot’s body? I think it might be nicer to swap sides. Not sure, though.

Game doesn’t feel very clear to me right now.

Don’t feel there’s much feedback on when I can/can’t use whatever it is I have. Also don’t feel there’s much visual indication about what I have – being able to distinguish ships by ability might be nice.

Is there any reason to hit restart right now?

  2. I originally had it so you swapped sides when you still had allies, but that was far too brutal and chaotic. The main issue was that your success/failure was getting flipped around mid battle, so doing well and then dying would leave you in trouble, but doing badly and then dying would leave you with an easy win.

I’ll working on clarity. I guess I’ll have to add ‘heat’ bars on the UI that show you when your weapons are overheating and what they are.

‘Restart’ is just for playing again after you run out of lives, it’s not an ingame thing.

    Cheers!

  3. Too loud! Needs a volume control/mute, and to be quieter by default. It completely drowned out IPlayer turned up to 11.

  4. @increpare: Gotcha. I’ll work on making time more obvious and important.

@Dan: Sorry! 😀 I’ll turn it down a bit (and the full version will definitely have a mute). Thanks for checking it out!
